The New AI Solution

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science that focuses on the use of computer technology to mimic the cognitive functions of the human mind. The overall research goal of AI is to create general intelligence. The general problem of simulating intelligence has been broken down into sub-problems such as problem solving, planning and natural language processing.

Human Programming vs. Machine Programming

Since its inception in the 1950s, numerous AI techniques have been developed which can be classified into two basic types: human-programmed and machine-programmed. Human-programmed AI techniques are characterized by explicit programming by a human being. An example of an human-programmed AI technique is Expert Systems. Machine-programmed AI techniques are characterized by having the machine program the system on its own without explicit programming by a human. An example of a machine-programmed AI technique is Machine Learning.

There is a major safety issue involved in using machine-programmed AI systems to address human survival problems because it would allow the computer to determine human survival knowledge, and make human survival decisions on its own. Everyone’s fear that machines will gain control over humans — and then terminate us (as in the Terminator movie series) — could be realized. Therefore, machine-programmed AI techniques need to be carefully restricted and regulated for use on human survival problems.

The Human Survival Problem Solver (HSPS) is a human-programmed AI system because it requires programming by human experts. The HSPS falls into the AI category of “problem solving expert system.”

The New Intelligent Logic

One of the primary innovations in the HSPS is a new intelligent logic format that does two primary things:

1. it enables the application of intelligent reasoning on why certain actions are necessary to solve certain human survival problems. Conventional logic can only address questions of what and how; and
2. it ensures that all data in the system is directly relevant to human survival problems. This eliminates all the problems with erratic, unsafe and irrelevant data.

The database (a.k.a. knowledge base) is built and certified by human experts who enter their expert knowledge through a special expert user interface. Human survival solutions are displayed to users in the form of a list of actions necessary to solve the human survival problems submitted by the users through a regular user interface.

The Coronavirus pandemic demonstrates the severity and urgency of human survival problems. Had the HSPS been available prior to the Coronavirus pandemic, the virus could have been quickly contained, large numbers of human lives could have been saved, and widespread pain and suffering could have been prevented.
